Casa de España en Indiana wants this website to be usable by everyone in our community, regardless of ability or the technology they use to browse the web. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, and we treat accessibility as an ongoing effort rather than a one-time checklist.
2. What We've Built In
Measures currently in place across the site include:
- Semantic HTML landmarks (navigation, main content, footer) so screen readers can jump between sections
- Alt text on meaningful images, and decorative icons hidden from assistive technology so they don't add noise
- Visible focus outlines on every interactive element — links, buttons, form fields — for keyboard navigation
- Keyboard-operable interactive components, including the newcomers guide's expandable sections and the past events photo viewer (which traps focus while open and returns it to where you were when closed)
- Form fields with visible labels, inline error messages, and validation that doesn't rely on color alone
- A color palette checked against WCAG AA contrast requirements for body text
- Full bilingual support (English/Spanish) across the site
3. Known Limitations
No website is perfectly accessible, and this one is no exception. Some pages rely on third-party services (like our news feed or donation processor) whose accessibility we don't fully control. If you run into a barrier, we want to know about it — see the contact section below.
